Jackson, MS Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Sec. 102-31 exempts "garage and yard sale signs which do not exceed six square feet in area and are limited to one per premise and are removed within one day of the event" from the permit requirement that otherwise applies to signs citywide. That size and duration limit runs alongside the underlying garage-sale rules in Sec. 00 zoning permit for any sale lasting more than three days and cap a given address to one such sale every six months; the sign exemption doesn't change either requirement.

Where a sign is posted matters too: Sec. 102-32(7) separately prohibits "the tacking, painting, posting or affixing of signs, posters or advertising devices of any kind on trees, rocks, utility poles and other such structures," which covers the common practice of stapling garage-sale signs to utility poles or street signs at intersections. A sign that's oversized, left up past the one-day removal window, or posted on a pole or tree loses its Sec. 102-31(20) exemption and is treated as a violation subject to the same building-official enforcement process as any other noncompliant sign under Sec. 102-33, including the 30-day notice and 90-day removal deadline before the city takes it down and bills the property owner.
