Jackson, MS Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Under the General Code's sign article, political signs are listed among the exempt signs that do not require a permit, but the exemption comes with hard limits. Section 102-31(12) requires that such signs be located no less than ten feet from any public right-of-way, caps the area at 12 square feet, and bars them from the right-of-way entirely. Each premise is limited to one sign per candidate, so a yard cannot be papered with duplicate signs for the same race. The removal clock starts when the candidacy ends: the code gives candidates 15 days after the election in which their candidacy ends to take the signs down.

If they do not, or if a sign sits in the right-of-way at any time, the building official issues a 72-hour notice to remove it. Separately, Section 102-32(1) treats an 'out-of-date political sign' as a prohibited sign, meaning a stale sign can be cited as a general prohibited-sign violation even before the 15-day window closes if it becomes derelict or unsafe. Both provisions sit in Chapter 102, Article II of the General Code, last consolidated with amendments through Ordinance No. 2010-12(7).
