Sandy, UT Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Sandy City Code §21-26-7 sets a general height cap for on-premises pylon signs but carves out taller allowances for freeway frontage. ' Ordinary pylon signs are capped at 25 feet above the curb or street crown, but the code specifically allows freeway parcels to build 'a height not greater than 25 feet above the nearest traveled freeway lane or frontage road, whichever is greater,' which can push the visible sign well above 25 feet of curb-measured height where the freeway sits in a cut or on an elevated grade.

The Director may also grant additional special-exception height to businesses obstructed by a freeway overpass, based on a topographic survey and visual simulations showing the extra height is the minimum needed for visibility. Sandy's Attachment B sign-area formula, referenced in §21-26-12, sizes a freeway-abutting pylon sign at 100 square feet plus one additional square foot for every lineal foot of street frontage beyond 100 feet, up to a 200-square-foot maximum, roughly double the area allowed for an ordinary monument sign. Every pylon sign, freeway-facing or not, must also sit at least 30 feet back from the property line, cover its structural supports with architecturally compatible pole covers, and is barred entirely on parcels or planned centers smaller than seven acres or with less than 300 feet of street frontage.
