Tamarac, FL Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

The Land Development Code confines billboard advertising to the corridors that matter most to a passing driver. Under LDC § 10-4.10(D)(4)(a)A-B, a billboard sign may be located only on city-owned property or right-of-way adjacent or contiguous to a major expressway within Tamarac's municipal boundaries, and the Code defines 'major expressway' narrowly as SR 869/Sawgrass Expressway and the Florida Turnpike; a billboard proposed along Commercial Boulevard, University Drive, or any other city street does not qualify. Orientation is equally strict: every billboard must be oriented solely for advertisement to the traveling public on the major expressway, meaning the sign face has to be placed so it is directed at motor vehicles traveling on that expressway, not at a side street, a shopping center, or a residential block.

The number of faces a structure may carry then turns on distance from housing: a billboard within 1,500 feet of residential property is limited to a single face directed at expressway traffic, while one sited more than 1,500 feet away may carry up to two faces, arranged either in a 'V' or back-to-back configuration. Structures must also sit at least 1,500 feet from another billboard, 150 feet from an existing residential use, and 25 feet from an existing non-residential building in a commercial or industrial district, with the applicant furnishing FDOT and Broward County permits before the city will issue its own. No face may exceed 50 feet in height or 672 square feet, 14 by 48 feet, in area.
