Avondale, AZ Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Avondale addresses garage, yard, and estate sale signs in Chapter 28, Article 9 of its Zoning Ordinance. Section 28-202(a)(9) lists these signs among those permitted without a sign permit, but they are subject to the City's general temporary-sign standards under Section 28-202(c): a temporary sign shall be displayed for no more than 24 hours in any 48-hour period, shall be no larger than four square feet, and shall be no taller than three feet. The general sign rules in Section 28-195 also apply, including the prohibition on placing signs in the public right-of-way except where explicitly allowed, the requirement not to obstruct sidewalks or driveways, and the rule in Section 28-195(a)(12) that signs may not be placed on private property without the owner's written consent. Separately, Avondale's nuisance and garage-sale provisions limit the sales themselves: garage or yard sales may not exceed 60 consecutive hours or occur more than four times per year, and may not run between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Residents should remove sale signs promptly after the event and avoid attaching them to utility poles, traffic signs, or other public structures, which the City may remove.
