Lenexa, KS Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Lenexa's garage sale rule at Section 4-1-B-24-F-6 tells sellers to follow the sign regulations, and the Unified Development Code's definition of a temporary sign names garage sale signs as an example. The operative rule is Section 4-1-E-4-F, temporary signs. A temporary sign is any sign of cloth, canvas, light fabric, cardboard, wallboard or other like materials, with or without frames, intended for a short display. Except as otherwise provided in the code, temporary signs need no sign permit. They are permitted on any property, of the same size as allowed for real estate signs, with the consent of the property owner.

Unless another provision says otherwise, a temporary sign can be posted for ninety (90) days, at which time it must be removed or replaced. The garage sale section itself limits sales to 2 events a year of no more than 4 days each, so a sign displayed for the sale should come down after the event rather than run the full ninety days. Placement is limited by Section 4-1-E-6. No sign can be placed within a public park or other public property except by the governmental entity that owns it, and no sign except a government sign can be located within the public right-of-way.

Temporary signs are allowed in the right-of-way only for the forty-five days before a primary, general or special election, and must be removed two days after it, so a sign staked in the right-of-way for a garage sale is outside the code. The printed cross-reference in the garage sale section points to Section 4-1-E-4-N, which in the exported code covers signs on machinery and equipment. Signs also cannot sit within the required sight-distance triangle.
