Lenexa, KS Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Window signs are one of the sign types listed in Section 4-1-E-4 of the Lenexa City Code as exempt from permit requirements, though they still must conform with every other requirement of Article 4-1-E. Subsection G sets two ceilings for non-illuminated signs: 20 percent of the overall window area per facade, and no greater than 50 percent of an individual window section on which the sign is placed. Both limits apply together, so a single pane covered past the halfway mark is over the line even when the facade total stays under 20 percent.

For lit signs, the code says illuminated signs are permitted in lieu of non-illuminated signs, in an area not to exceed 50 percent of the area allowed for non-illuminated signs. The wording is "in lieu of," so a business chooses between the two and does not stack them.

Illumination is also constrained by Section 4-1-E-3. Lights that flash, move, rotate, scintillate, blink, flicker or vary in intensity or color are prohibited, except for time/temperature, date, stock market or similar brief informational displays. Signs of such intensity or brilliance as to cause glare or impair the vision of motorists, cyclists or pedestrians are prohibited, and so are unshielded lights, other than time/temperature devices with a light output of no more than 250 lumens. Section 4-1-E-7 allows bare neon tube lighting in an open channel design, counted toward allowable sign area. Section 4-1-E-3 also prohibits signs using in whole or in part any fluorescent color, and it requires abandoned signs to be removed within 3 months.

Separately, Section 4-1-E-4-F treats signs made of cloth, canvas, light fabric, cardboard, wallboard or like materials, intended to be displayed for a short period, as temporary signs. They need no sign permit and must be removed or replaced after ninety days. Section 4-1-E-8 confirms that the erection of any sign described in Section 4-1-E-4 does not require a sign permit.
