Parsippany-Troy Hills, NJ Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Section 430-280 of the Township Code lists signs exempt from permit and fee requirements, and it limits them to one per parcel. Subsection H covers temporary signs indicating a political preference or a political event. Each sign cannot exceed 32 square feet in area on any one surface, and the signs must be removed within 15 days after the completion of the political function. The code prohibits erecting or installing any political sign upon any pole, tree or in a public right-of-way. Temporary lawn signs and street banners remain governed by other provisions of the sign chapter.

Chapter 334, Signs, Campaign and Special Events, adds a second layer for the Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills. Under § 334-3, no campaign material or special event material may be affixed upon any public place or public facility, a term that includes traffic signal poles, utility poles, parking meters, trees, benches, bus shelters, litter receptacles, vacant buildings and fences bordering vacant lots. Campaign material cannot be painted or affixed on private property, a private fence or a private tree without the consent of the owner. Section 334-5 requires each piece of campaign material to carry the name and address of the person who paid for printing, copying, publishing and posting, and of the printer, in accordance with N.J.S.A. 19:34-38.1.

Removal timing is spelled out in § 334-4. Campaign material posted lawfully on a vacant or unattended place must come down no later than 14 days after the event or election it refers to. A person who misses the deadline receives a warning of violation by certified mail requiring removal within seven days of receipt, after which the penalty provision of § 334-7 applies. Under § 334-6, the person named on the material and any other person who actually placed it are both responsible for removal.
