Yorba Linda, CA Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Chapter 18.24, Section 18.24.070 governs temporary signs placed within the public right-of-way in Yorba Linda, defined as the landscaped parkway between the sidewalk and the right-of-way line, or between back-of-curb and the right-of-way line where no sidewalk exists. Temporary noncommercial signs, such as political and campaign signs, and real estate directional signs are permitted there subject to location and size rules. Signs cannot overhang a street, curb, sidewalk, trail or driveway, cannot sit within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, and cannot be affixed to traffic control devices, utility poles, fences, shrubs or trees; they must be freestanding.

Size is limited to six square feet and four feet in height as measured from grade. Unless the sign is clearly self-identifying, the owner must attach a name, address and phone number before installing it. Timing rules split by sign type: signs tied to a specific event come down within five days after that event, real estate directional signs stand only from sunrise to sundown, and all other noncommercial temporary signs are capped at 10 consecutive days unless another chapter provision sets a different period.

The Community Development Director, or a designee, can summarily abate any noncompliant sign in the right-of-way after attempting notice to the identified owner, and the City retains a removed sign for at least three working days before discarding it. Separately, Section 18.24.070(B) covers noncommercial signs placed on private property rather than the right-of-way: those need the property owner's permission, cannot block sight lines for traffic, and unless another chapter section applies are capped at an aggregate 32 square feet and six feet in height per residence or business.

Political signs read as noncommercial speech under the chapter's sign definitions, so both the right-of-way and private-property tracks apply depending on where a resident chooses to post one.
