Trash and recycling carts must be placed at the curb no earlier than the evening before collection and removed from the curb by the end of the collection day. Carts must be stored out of public view between pickups, typically behind the front building line or inside a garage or screened area.
Chesapeake City Code Chapter 62 and the Property Maintenance provisions require residents to store solid waste carts so they are not visible from the street right-of-way between collection days. Acceptable storage locations include the side or rear yard behind the front plane of the house, inside a garage, or in a screened enclosure. Carts should not block sidewalks, bike lanes, or travel lanes. For automated collection to work, carts must be spaced at least 3 feet apart from each other and from obstacles like parked cars, mailboxes, utility poles, and low-hanging tree branches. The arrow or handle on the cart should face the house so the automated arm grips correctly. Carts placed out earlier than the evening before pickup, or left at the curb beyond the collection day, are subject to Code Compliance action.
Cart visible from street between collection days: notice of violation followed by civil penalty. Repeat violations may result in daily fines.
