Chesapeake provides curbside single-stream recycling in a 95-gallon cart on an every-other-week schedule. Accepted items include paper, cardboard, metal cans, glass bottles, and plastics marked 1 and 2. Plastic bags, food waste, and textiles are not accepted curbside.
Residential recycling is collected biweekly through the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) contract program. Single-stream means all accepted recyclables go in one cart, no sorting required. Accepted materials: paper (newspaper, magazines, office paper, junk mail), corrugated cardboard flattened to fit the cart, paperboard boxes, aluminum and steel food and beverage cans, glass bottles and jars (clear, green, brown), and plastic containers with resin codes 1 (PET) and 2 (HDPE). Not accepted: plastic bags and film, styrofoam, food-soiled paper, pizza boxes with grease, diapers, needles, electronics, and yard waste. Items should be empty and rinsed; caps can stay on. Contaminated carts are tagged and not collected until contamination is removed. Glass may be subject to program changes based on SPSA market conditions; residents should check the city website for current accepted list.
Contamination of recycling cart: cart tagged and skipped. Repeat contamination may result in removal of recycling service.
