Chesapeake Waste Management provides once-weekly automated curbside collection of household trash using city-issued 95-gallon carts. Service day depends on your collection route; carts must be placed at the curb by 7 AM on pickup day and removed by the end of the collection day. Holidays may shift collection by one day.
Chesapeake City Code Chapter 62 (Solid Waste) and Waste Management Division rules govern residential collection. Each single-family residence receives one 95-gallon wheeled cart for household refuse. Carts must be placed at the curb with wheels toward the house and handle toward the street, at least 3 feet from mailboxes, vehicles, and other obstructions so the automated arm can grasp them. Trash must be bagged inside the cart; loose trash is not collected. Extra bags placed beside the cart are not collected under standard service. Observed holidays that delay collection: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day; when a holiday falls on or before your collection day, service slides one day later for the rest of the week. Construction debris, tires, batteries, paint, and hazardous materials are excluded and must go to the Chesapeake Landfill or hazardous waste collection events.
Leaving carts at curb beyond pickup day, overloaded carts, or improper materials: warning followed by civil penalty under City Code Chapter 62.
