Kershaw County, SC Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Kershaw County Code § 28-133 places the placement duty on the customer: containers shall be placed near curbside of the nearest road on the day of collection and removed from the curbside by the resident as soon as practical afterward. Yard debris is picked up at curbside only, and yard trash in plastic bags or covered cans must be set on the property next to the curb but out of the traveling surface of the roadway, not in the road itself. Every garbage receptacle other than single-use paper or plastic bags and cardboard boxes must be kept clean and free of accumulated waste, and treated with an effective insecticide by the customer if needed to prevent a nuisance.

Owners must prevent excessive, unsightly accumulation of refuse on their property or an adjoining public thoroughfare, and no one but the owner, the owner's agents, or the county's contracted collection employees may tamper with a container or remove its contents. Dead animals are not collected; dead household pets are the property owner's responsibility. A collector may refuse continued service to any customer who fails to pay or fails to follow these placement rules.
