Kershaw County, SC Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Kershaw County Code § 28-132(b)(3) requires every franchise collection contract awarded by the county council to include biweekly collection of recyclables, specifically glass, paper, metal and cardboard, in containers supplied by the collector rather than the customer. This runs alongside the once-a-week household garbage pickup and seasonal weekly yard trash service required by the same section, so a subscribing single-family or duplex household in the unincorporated county gets recycling on a two-week rotation regardless of which of the eight franchise areas it falls in under section 28-131.

Because recycling here is a franchise contract term rather than a separately funded municipal program, participation follows the same subscribe-and-pay structure as garbage service: households in a franchise area have the option to subscribe to the collector, and the collector supplies the recycling container as part of that service. The county's director of environmental services administers and enforces the article, and service complaints, including missed recycling pickups, go through the staff complaint register under section 28-134.
