Kershaw County, SC Trash & Recycling: Pickup Rules & Schedules (2026)

Kershaw County Code § 28-132 governs how the county's residential solid waste franchise operates: a franchise does not become effective until the collector executes a written contract consistent with the bid specifications the county council approved through competitive bidding. That written contract must include once-a-week collection of household garbage, with the collector providing the roll cart, which must be at least 90 gallons in size, fitted with a cover, and maintained in good repair. This weekly garbage pickup runs alongside the seasonal yard trash and biweekly recyclables service required by the same section.

Section 28-128 separately bars accumulating household garbage anywhere except in plastic bags, sanitary covered cans, or other staff-approved containers, and bars letting trash, rubbish or refuse pile up where it could harbor mosquitoes, vermin or rats. Only single-family and duplex residential customers within a franchise area are covered; apartment complexes and commercial or industrial customers are excluded under section 28-124. The director of environmental services administers and enforces the article, with service issues tracked through the complaint register in section 28-134.
