Kershaw County, SC Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Kershaw County Code § 28-132(b)(4) requires every franchise contract to address bulky waste separately from routine garbage, yard trash and recyclables service: furniture, furnishings, appliances, building material, large tree limbs or other large items may be picked up, but only for a fee negotiated between the customer and the collector. The county council itself has no authority to set or determine that fee, meaning the price for a couch or a fallen limb pickup is whatever the customer and the franchise collector agree to, not a fixed schedule in the ordinance.

This sits alongside section 28-133's customer duties, which bar dumping items too large for a normal collection vehicle at the curb without arranging that separate pickup, and section 28-128's rule that bulky material left to accumulate on a property becomes an unlawful nuisance if it can harbor vermin. Because bulky pickup is outside the standard weekly/biweekly rotation, residents in the unincorporated county must contact their franchise collector directly to schedule and price it rather than expecting it on a set day.
