Residents receive three color-coded carts from Pittsburg Disposal: gray for trash, blue for recycling, and green for organics/food scraps. Carts must stay closed, never overfilled, and be kept clean. Extra bags outside the cart are not collected unless the resident has purchased an overflow tag.
Pittsburg uses the California-standard three-cart color system required by SB 1383 and CalRecycle regulations: gray lid for refuse (landfill), blue lid for recyclables, and green lid for organics (yard waste plus food scraps and food-soiled paper). Standard residential cart sizes are 35, 64, and 96 gallons; rates vary by the size of the gray cart. Lids must be fully closed - overflowing material, material leaning against the cart, or material set outside the cart will not be collected and can result in a contamination or overage charge. Carts must be kept clean, in good repair, and free of graffiti; replacements for damaged carts are provided by the hauler at no charge unless damage is caused by the customer. Carts are the property of Garaventa Enterprises and must remain at the service address. Hot ashes, hazardous waste, batteries, electronic waste, sharps, liquids, and construction debris are prohibited in any cart. Contamination of the blue or green cart (putting trash in recycling or organics) is subject to warning notices and, after repeated violations, contamination fees consistent with SB 1383 enforcement. Between collection days, carts must be stored out of view from the public street.
