Roanoke County, VA Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Roanoke County's automated collection rules set exact timing and spacing for where a household's garbage cart sits. Sec. on the scheduled collection day, and Sec. the day after collection, so carts cannot sit at the curb between pickups. Sec. 20-24(b) adds a clearance rule for the automated container itself: when it is set to the curb line, it must have at least five feet of clearance on all sides so the automated truck arm can lift it safely. Each residential structure is issued one automated container, which is assigned to the structure rather than to whoever lives there, and a resident may buy a second cart but no more than two per household are allowed.

Home-based businesses that qualify for a container under the commercial-collection provisions are likewise capped at two. Backyard, premium and physically-challenged customers are exempt only from the curb-placement step; they still follow every other automated-collection guideline, including the bagging and container-limit rules. Replacement or repair costs for a lost or damaged cart fall on the resident when the solid waste manager finds the damage was due to negligence, and a cart lost to fire is always the homeowner's replacement cost.
