Roanoke County, VA Trash & Recycling: Pickup Rules & Schedules (2026)

The Board of Supervisors' solid waste ordinance (Chapter 20, Article II) gives every county resident along a qualified road the right to weekly curbside garbage collection at no charge, administered by the county administrator through the Department of General Services (Sec. 20-22, Sec. 20-23). The Town of Vinton runs its own collection and is excluded from this article entirely (Sec. 20-21), so Vinton residents follow the town's rules, not the county's. To use curbside service, Sec. 20-24(a) requires every bag of household waste to go into an approved container, and it bars a specific list of materials from collection: dead animals, hazardous material, automobile parts, ashes, liquids, debris, rocks, dirt, mulch, concrete or construction waste, and contractor or commercial waste, plus anything else the county deems unsafe to handle.

Sharps and needles must be sealed in a proper needle-disposal container or another heavy, capped plastic container such as a detergent bottle, milk jug or soft-drink bottle before they go out. Pet feces must be double-bagged. Latex paint is only collectible once it has completely solidified in the can; wet paint is refused. Backyard and premium collection customers (Sec. 20-24(c), (d)) follow the same bagging and weight rules, and commercial customers generating more than three containers or 300 gallons a week must arrange private hauling instead of county pickup. Mixed loads, such as bulk intermingled with brush, and anything contaminated with hazardous waste, will not be collected under any circumstances (Sec. 20-24(h)).
