Roanoke County, VA Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Sec. 20-25(b) covers yard waste, distinct from the county's separate brush-collection provision in Sec. 20-25(a). Residential customers may place small quantities of bagged yard waste, grass clippings and similar debris directly in their county-provided automated container on their regular weekly collection day at no extra charge. Once the quantity exceeds what the cart can hold, the excess has to go into disposable containers, such as plastic or paper bags, set at the road or curb line for the county's scheduled bulk collection run rather than the weekly garbage pickup.

Those disposable bags must be sturdy enough to hold their contents and cannot weigh more than thirty pounds when full, matching the weight cap the county applies to bagged leaves and bulk debris elsewhere in the same article. Bagged yard-waste clippings must also be kept separate from any bulk items or brush placed out at the same time, so a mixed pile of clippings and furniture, for example, will not be picked up as yard waste. The county layers a seasonal program on top of this: Sec.

20-25(c) collects bagged leaves for six weeks starting the first Monday in November (skipping Thanksgiving week) and Christmas trees separately for one week in January, both requiring placement within five feet of the curb. Materials from land-clearing or a commercial landscaping operation are excluded from all of this and remain the property owner's or contractor's responsibility to dispose of under Sec. 20-25(d).
