Burlington, NC Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Under Burlington City Code section 33-31(8), bulk trash collection is a residential-only service run by the sanitation superintendent; the city's automated garbage crews do not haul it on the regular weekly run. Residents must place bulk items at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day set by the sanitation superintendent, and the load has to be kept separate from ordinary wet and dry garbage. Anything too large to fit in the collection truck stays at the curb; the crew will not force it aboard.

Windows, doors, mirrors, and any item with a large glass panel need an X taped across the glass so it doesn't shatter during loading, and lawn equipment must have its gasoline drained first. Rolled carpet and padding qualify only if tied in sections no longer than five feet. Overflow volumes of everyday wet and dry garbage don't count as bulk trash and won't be picked up under this provision. The sanitation superintendent or a designee can require residents to prep items for safe handling and may simply refuse anything left unprepared, per section 33-31(8)(b).

Cost is separate from the flat monthly solid waste fee: under section 33-51(b), bulk trash and limb removal is billed by the actual cubic yards hauled away, following the city's solid waste fee schedule rather than a flat rate. Households on private streets covered by a curbside-service agreement are bound by the same placement rules. Residents who need help should call the sanitation division ahead of the scheduled pickup day rather than leaving oversized debris at the curb indefinitely, since anything left improperly staged risks a nuisance citation under the broader sanitation chapter.
