Contra Costa County, CA Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Unincorporated Contra Costa County residents receiving franchised residential service are entitled to annual bulky item collection events as part of their subscription. Republic Services and Mt. Diablo Recycling typically offer one to two free pickups per year with up to six bulky items each, including furniture, mattresses, appliances, and e-waste. Freon-containing appliances (refrigerators, air conditioners) require proper refrigerant recovery before collection. Items must be placed curbside on the scheduled pickup date; unscheduled dumping is not collected and may trigger illegal dumping enforcement. Construction debris, hazardous waste, tires, and automotive fluids are excluded and must go to the Contra Costa Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Martinez. Additional pickups beyond the annual allotment are available at hauler rates (typically $50-150 per load). Mattresses are also accepted free through the state's Bye Bye Mattress program at participating recyclers.
