Republic Services provides two complimentary bulky-item curbside pickups per year for residential Martinez customers, with up to three items per pickup. Accepted items include furniture, mattresses (prepared in plastic mattress bags), appliances without refrigerant, and large toys. Additional pickups beyond the two free allotments are available for a fee. Items must be scheduled in advance; unscheduled placement at the curb constitutes illegal dumping.
Under the franchise agreement with Martinez, Republic Services offers each single-family residential account two on-call bulky-item collections per calendar year at no additional charge. Each collection allows up to three items. Customers must schedule pickups at least 48 hours in advance by calling (925) 685-4711 or through the Republic Services online portal. Items placed at the curb without scheduling may be treated as illegally dumped waste subject to enforcement.
Accepted items include couches, chairs, tables, mattresses and box springs (typically required to be bagged in plastic mattress covers to comply with state bed-bug transport rules), dressers, water heaters, washers and dryers, stoves, and dishwashers. Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners containing refrigerant (CFCs/HCFCs) require special handling under federal Clean Air Act section 608 and may incur an additional fee for proper refrigerant recovery before disposal.
Unaccepted items include construction debris, concrete, dirt, hazardous waste, tires, batteries, paint, motor oil, e-waste (TVs, computers, monitors), and propane tanks. These must be taken to the Contra Costa County Household Hazardous Waste facility at 4797 Imhoff Place (free for Contra Costa residents) or the transfer station. Mattresses can also be recycled free of charge through the Bye Bye Mattress program under California's Used Mattress Recovery and Recycling Act (SB 254).
