Republic Services is the exclusive franchised solid waste hauler for Martinez under a long-term agreement with the city. Residential customers receive weekly curbside collection of garbage, recycling, and organics (green waste plus food scraps) on an assigned day. Carts must be placed at the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day and removed by the end of the day per Martinez Municipal Code Chapter 8.10.
Residential solid waste service in Martinez is provided exclusively by Republic Services under a franchise agreement regulated by the City Council. Weekly collection includes three streams: a gray/black cart for landfill garbage, a blue cart for mixed recyclables (paper, cardboard, glass, metal, rigid plastics), and a green cart for organics combining yard waste and food scraps as required by SB 1383.
Carts must be placed at the curb with wheels against the curb and handles facing the house, at least three feet of clearance on all sides, by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled collection day. Empty carts must be removed from public view by the end of the collection day under MMC Chapter 8.10. Cart sizes are typically 35, 64, or 96 gallons, with rates set by the approved rate schedule on file with the Finance Department.
Collection schedules shift by one day when a major holiday (New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas) falls on or before the normal collection day that week. Republic Services offers on-call bulky item pickup (two free pickups per year for residential customers, up to three items each), electronics collection, and household hazardous waste drop-off through the Contra Costa County facility on Imhoff Place in Martinez. Missed pickups should be reported to Republic Services within 24 hours at (925) 685-4711.
