Republic Services offers Richmond residents two free bulk item pickups per calendar year for large items like mattresses, furniture, and appliances. Additional pickups and items exceeding the limits are available for a fee. Scheduling is required at least one week in advance.
As part of the Republic Services franchise with Richmond, each single-family residential account receives two complimentary bulk pickups per calendar year, each accepting up to four items or the equivalent of about one cubic yard. Acceptable bulk items include mattresses and box springs, upholstered furniture, large appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves β CFC-containing units are handled separately), dressers, bed frames, and similar oversized items. Not accepted in bulk pickup: construction debris, hazardous waste, automotive parts, tires (limited), propane tanks, or electronics (which go through HHW). Residents schedule a bulk pickup by calling Republic Services at 510-262-7100 or through their online account, with at least 7 days' notice. Items must be placed curbside (not in the street or blocking sidewalks) the evening before or by 6 AM the scheduled day. Additional bulk pickups beyond the two free events cost approximately $25-75 depending on item count and type. Multi-family properties negotiate bulk pickup as part of the complex's service agreement. Mattresses are recycled through the California Bye Bye Mattress program (funded by the recycling fee paid at purchase). Appliances with refrigerants (fridges, freezers, AC units) have CFC/HFC recovered by certified technicians before recycling. For large cleanouts, Republic offers temporary roll-off bins at commercial rates.
