Hamden, CT Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Section 94.36's definitions set the size thresholds that separate ordinary trash from bulky waste in Hamden. 'Nonprocessible solid waste' includes street sweepings, noncombustible construction and demolition debris, oversized bulky waste exceeding seven feet by three feet by five feet, tree stumps, logs, brush, and combustible demolition debris longer than four feet or thicker than four inches, and other heavy items such as white goods and engine blocks that could damage the resource-recovery facility. Bundled yard waste gets its own limit: a 'bundle' of boxes, cartons, paper, or trimmings may not exceed four feet in length, six and one-half feet in perimeter, or 75 pounds.

Because these categories cannot simply be set at the curb like ordinary garbage, § 94.40(C) requires that appliances, white goods, recyclable salvage material, tires, construction or demolition material, structure-fire debris, and trees, stumps, limbs, or trunks not be dumped at the solid waste disposal area until the person in charge is notified, so that staff can direct the load to the correct part of the site or to a different approved location entirely. The Director of Public Works oversees the disposal area's hours and, under § 94.40(I), the Legislative Council can set a weight- or volume-based fee schedule for materials brought there.

Each unauthorized load delivered without the required notice, or delivered to the wrong site, is treated as its own separate violation under the chapter's enforcement provisions.
