Vermilion Parish, LA Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Section 32-34 of the Vermilion Parish Code governs large household discards in unincorporated Vermilion Parish. Under subsection (a), refuse that is not allowed in a trash container cannot go in the container, and it cannot be placed on the road shoulder for collection unless a request has been made with the Police Jury. Whatever is put on the shoulder must be removed by the owner within a reasonable period not to exceed one month.

Subsection (b) lists what counts: branches, tree limbs, small tree trunks (six-inch diameter), small tree roots (18-inch diameter), household furniture, and old carpets, linoleum and like floor coverings. These go at the back of the road right-of-way, but not on a catchbasin, or at any other location the Police Jury designates. None of these items can be over 18 inches in diameter or over six feet long.

Items that break those size limits are the owner's problem under Sec. 32-37. The owner removes them at the owner's expense, again within a reasonable period not to exceed one month. If the owner does not, the Police Jury gives 24 hours' notice of its intention to remove the items and then charges the actual cost of removal, with a minimum charge of $100.00 for each collection. If the bill is not paid within 30 days, the Police Jury sends notice by registered mail to the owner listed on the parish tax rolls. If it is still unpaid after 30 days, the Police Jury holds a lien and privilege on the real property once recorded, and the amount is carried as an assessment on the parish tax rolls.

Other large items follow their own sections. Sec. 32-41 sends appliances through the normal trash pickup by the Police Jury, and Sec. 32-42 allows a refrigerator or deep freezer out for special pickup only if sealed to prevent entry. Sec. 32-40(a) requires building debris such as plaster, roofing, concrete and brickbats to be privately removed by the generator. Sec. 32-31 makes the person who incurs any Police Jury fee for special items or additional services pay it.
