Vermilion Parish, LA Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Section 32-35 of the Vermilion Parish Code splits yard waste in unincorporated Vermilion Parish into two streams. Woody material is covered by subsection (a): anyone placing tree trimmings, hedge cuttings or shrubbery of any kind for removal puts it at the back of the road right-of-way for collection, and no material in excess of six feet long, nor in excess of 18 inches in diameter, can be placed for pickup. Soft material is covered by subsection (b): leaves, weeds and grass are considered trash and cannot go on the public rights-of-way in any manner other than bagged and placed within a regulation container as defined in Sec. 32-29.

The Code's definition of trash reinforces the split. It lists small quantities of grass trimmings, leaves and hedge trimmings among trash, and it defines a trash container as the mechanically collected container distributed by the Police Jury. Because leaves and grass ride in that container, the placement window in Sec. 32-32(b) applies to it: the container cannot be put on the road shoulder more than 24 hours before the designated collection and must be off the shoulder within 24 hours after.

Branches and small tree trunks have a companion rule in Sec. 32-34(b), which allows tree limbs and small tree trunks (six-inch diameter) and small tree roots (18-inch diameter) at the back of the right-of-way, not on a catchbasin, provided none is over 18 inches in diameter or six feet long. Anything larger falls under Sec. 32-37, where the property owner must remove it at the owner's expense within a reasonable period not to exceed one month. If the owner does not, the Police Jury gives 24 hours' notice and bills actual cost with a minimum charge of $100.00 for each collection.

Do not sweep clippings into the street. Sec. 32-48 makes it unlawful to sweep paper, trash, litter, dirt or other material into roads, streets, sidewalks or other public ways, and Sec. 32-45 bars placing trash or debris in drainage ditches.
