Vermilion Parish, LA Trash & Recycling: Pickup Rules & Schedules (2026)

Section 32-32 governs where a container sits between pickups. Under subsection (a), all trash containers must be kept on the property so they are obscured from public view. A container cannot remain along or adjacent to the curbline in front of the property that generated the trash, unless it sits inside an enclosed fence situated off of the parish right-of-way.

Subsection (b) covers collection day. Containers go on the road shoulder in front of the generating property, in the position and location the Police Jury designates. No container can be put on the shoulder more than 24 hours before the regularly designated collection for that property, and it must be removed within 24 hours after collection. Subsection (d) bars placing containers below or close to power lines or other wires that cross the street or roadway.

Subsection (c) offers a variance for anyone with a condition that prevents compliance or creates an undue hardship. The request goes to the Police Jury at 100 N. State St., Suite 200, Abbeville, LA 70510, and must include the party's name, the municipal address of the property, the trash container number, the reason and any medical documentation. The Police Jury decides case by case at its sole discretion.

Related pickup rules: § 32-34 and § 32-35 put branches, tree limbs and hedge cuttings at the back of the road right-of-way, with nothing over six feet long or 18 inches in diameter. Leaves, weeds and grass must be bagged and placed in a regulation container. Section 32-52 bars placing containers or debris so they interfere with motor vehicle traffic in any way. Section 32-44 makes tampering with containers unlawful, and § 32-49 bars scavenging from containers on the right-of-way.
