Full Breakdown

Section 82-2 sets both how often the city collects and how much it will take. Subsection (a) caps collection at two large polycarts on a garbage-only cycle or three large polycarts on a combined garbage-and-recycling cycle, and the city will not collect at all from a parcel that already receives private hauling.

Subsection (b) fixes the residential schedule: garbage is collected once each week, and collectable recyclables once every two weeks. Within that schedule, a single-family residence may set out two garbage polycarts at up to 200 pounds each on a garbage-only week, or three polycarts (at least one a recycling-designated cart) at up to 200 pounds each on a combined week; a two-, three- or four-unit residence gets one garbage polycart per unit on a garbage-only week, or two polycarts per unit, one of which must be a recycling cart, on a combined week. Subsection (c) bars any collection at all from multifamily sources, whose owners must arrange their own hauling. Subsection (d) sets a parallel weekly garbage and biweekly recycling schedule for commercial, institutional and manufacturing sources, with the same two-or-three-polycart caps, except that subsection (e) lifts the cap to five polycarts a week for specified downtown blocks including Mission Square, Perrot Square and Marquette Square. Subsection (g) excludes construction debris from city pickup entirely, leaving disposal to the owner or contractor.

Section 82-10(b) enforces the chapter's collection limits the same way as its other requirements: by municipal citation, with the forfeiture set by common council resolution and each 24-hour period of a violation, such as exceeding the polycart cap, counted as a separate offense.

Violations & Fines

Exceeding the polycart limits or otherwise violating the collection-cycle rules in section 82-2 is enforced under section 82-10(b) by municipal citation, with the forfeiture set by resolution of the common council. The street superintendent can also decline to collect from a parcel that repeatedly exceeds its cycle's weight or cart limits, per section 82-9(b) and (c).

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does De Pere pick up garbage and recycling?
Garbage is collected once a week and collectable recyclables once every two weeks for residential sources, under section 82-2(b). Commercial, institutional and manufacturing sources follow the same weekly garbage and biweekly recycling schedule under section 82-2(d).
How many garbage carts can I put out in De Pere?
A single-family residence gets two 200-pound garbage polycarts on a garbage-only week, or three polycarts, at least one designated for recycling, on a combined week, under section 82-2(b)(1)-(2). Multi-unit residences get one or two carts per unit depending on the cycle.
Does the city collect garbage from apartment buildings in De Pere?
No. Section 82-2(c) bars city collection of garbage and collectable recyclables from multifamily sources entirely; owners or agents of those buildings must arrange and pay for their own sanitary hauling in compliance with federal, state and local law.
Will the city pick up construction debris in De Pere?
No. Section 82-2(g) excludes construction debris from city collection altogether, making the property owner or contractor responsible for disposing of it properly under applicable law, separate from the regular weekly garbage and biweekly recyclables service the city otherwise provides to every residential and commercial parcel.
