Surry County, NC Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Surry County has no county-run curbside garbage truck; instead County Code § 110.04 places the removal duty on the property owner, occupant, tenant or lessee. Under § 110.04(B), all solid waste must be removed from the property at least once every 30 days, and weekly if needed for health and sanitation reasons. Garbage awaiting removal must be stored under § 110.04(C) in a container that is durable, rust-resistant, non-absorbent, water-tight, has a close-fitting fly-tight cover and handles, and holds no more than 35 gallons. Approved disposal outlets under § 110.04(F) are a permitted sanitary landfill, a permitted incinerator, county-provided or licensed private receptacles, or, for a resident's own waste, a method the Division of Waste Management has approved.

Residents who contract with a private hauler instead get service through the county's franchise system: § 110.12(H) requires a franchised solid waste collector to remove all solid waste from a customer's premises at least once a week, so long as the customer is no more than 30 days behind on collection fees. The Board of Commissioners grants these franchises for three-year renewable terms under § 110.12 and sets or approves the fees collectors can charge. The Local Ordinance Officer, the Development Services Director, the Sheriff's Office and Environmental Health Department inspectors enforce this chapter under § 110.02.

A property owner who lets waste accumulate past the removal window can also be cited separately under § 110.04(A) for permitting an unauthorized accumulation of solid waste.
