Surry County, NC Trash & Recycling: Pickup Rules & Schedules (2026)

Section 110.04(A) makes it unlawful for an owner, occupant, tenant or lessee to deposit, store or let solid waste accumulate on their property except as this chapter prescribes, and § 110.04(B) sets the baseline removal schedule: waste must be removed from the property at least once every 30-day period, and at least once every seven-day period if weekly removal is required for health and sanitation reasons. Section 110.04(C) specifies the container itself: garbage must be kept in a container that is 'durable, rust-resistant, non-absorbent, water-tight and easily cleaned,' fitted with a close-fitting, fly-tight cover and adequate handles, and capped at a 35-gallon capacity.

Section 110.04(D) adds that refuse storage must not create a rodent or varmint harborage or a fire hazard, and § 110.04(E) separately bars leaving an abandoned icebox, refrigerator or similar airtight-door receptacle outside where children could access it unless the door has first been removed. Section 110.04(F) limits final disposal to landfill, permitted incinerator, county or licensed-collector receptacles, resident self-hauling under Division of Waste Management-approved methods, or other approved reclamation and recycling. Because Surry County does not itself run curbside pickup countywide, these storage and removal duties fall on the property's own owner, occupant, tenant or lessee rather than on a scheduled municipal truck route.
