Surry County, NC Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Section 110.03 defines BULKY WASTE as 'large items of solid waste such as household appliances, furniture, large auto parts, tires, trees, branches, stumps and other oversize waste' whose size keeps it from being handled by normal solid waste collection, processing or disposal methods. Because trees, branches and stumps fall inside that definition, they are treated the same as other bulky waste under Chapter 110's disposal rules rather than as ordinary household refuse. Section 110.09(A) lets a Surry County resident or property owner use the county's sanitary landfills during regular operating hours, but disposal must follow the landfill manager's procedures.

Section 110.09(B)(1) specifically lists bulky wastes among the materials that 'may not be disposed of in the landfills without permission of the landfill manager or his or her representative,' and § 110.10(C)(5) separately excludes bulky wastes from the solid waste receptacles the county provides around the county, meaning yard debris like branches and stumps cannot simply be piled into a county dumpster. A resident with a large volume of storm debris, tree trimmings or stumps needs to contact the landfill manager in advance to arrange acceptable disposal, and construction or demolition debris connected to the same cleanup falls under the separate landfill-manager permission required by § 110.09(G).
