Colonie, NY Trash & Recycling: Pickup Rules & Schedules (2026)

Section 112-17 of Colonie's Solid Waste chapter, Article II's collection regulations, governs what happens to trash and recyclables once they're set out. Subsection A keeps solid waste or recyclables 'the property of such generator until accepted by the waste hauler,' at which point ownership passes to the hauler; if an authorized third party other than the hauler is designated to take the material, that party holds the same rights and responsibilities as the generator, including proper source separation, until the hauler accepts it. ' Subsection C puts responsibility back on the generator if a licensed hauler refuses or is unable to take an item because of a chapter violation, requiring the generator to pull the item back off the public right-of-way until the problem is fixed.

Subsection D requires any facility or structure built for collecting, separating, or disposing of solid waste to comply with all applicable federal, state, and local law. Violations of § 112-17, like every other Article II violation, are punished under § 112-11's schedule: up to $500 for a first offense, a 30-day suspension plus up to $1,000 for a second, and a one-year revocation plus up to $2,500 for a third, enforced by the Town of Colonie Police Department and Department of Public Works under § 112-12.
