Colonie, NY Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Section 112-16 of Colonie's Solid Waste chapter lists exactly how solid waste and recyclables must be prepared for collection or disposal, in Subsections A through G. Recyclable containers such as cans, bottles, and other containers must be 'clean of contents with all contaminants, such as lids, caps and tabs, removed' (Subsection A). Paper recyclables that water damages, like newspapers and cardboard, must be 'kept dry to the extent reasonably possible' (Subsection B), and different types of recyclables must be kept separated from each other and from other solid waste (Subsection C).

' A second recycling container may be used alongside the standardized one to help keep the material properly separated and improve its quality. Subsection F allows translucent plastic bags for solid waste as long as they are kept safe from animals and pests, and Subsection E permits oversized items that will not fit in a container to be left outside it only if they will not attract pests, create a health risk, or become a nuisance to children. A hauler that collects from a generator who has failed these preparation rules is barred from doing so once the failure is 'clear,' under § 112-18, and violations of the chapter carry the same escalating fine and suspension schedule set out in § 112-20.
