Kirkwood, MO Trash & Recycling: Pickup Rules & Schedules (2026)

Kirkwood Code of Ordinances § 10-27 governs how residential carts must be placed for curbside collection. Recycling carts and garbage and rubbish carts must be set within three feet of the curb or the edge of the public street pavement, positioned in front of the property adjacent to the driveway or entranceway, with the cart lid opening facing the street and at least three feet of clearance on each side of the cart. Carts cannot go out for collection any earlier than dusk on the evening before the scheduled collection day, and they must be removed from the street before the end of the collection day, then stored behind the actual front building line of the residence.

All recyclables, garbage, and rubbish must go inside the carts with lids closed; loose items outside the carts, including cardboard boxes left unbroken, will not be collected and remain the property owner's responsibility to dispose of. Residents who choose rear yard service instead of basic curbside service must locate their carts beyond the front building line, in a spot the Sanitation Division truck can access. Section 10-32 makes the owner responsible for keeping carts, which remain City property, in good and sanitary condition, and a fee applies if a cart needs repair or replacement due to abuse, misuse, defacing, or neglect.
