Chapter 57 (Garbage and Recycling), §§ 57.020–57.024 of the Sioux Falls Code govern residential collection. Every dwelling unit must contract with a licensed hauler for at least weekly garbage and twice-monthly recycling (single-stream). For curbside service (§ 57.023), containers must not be placed at the curb before noon of the day preceding collection and must be returned by 11 PM on collection day or two hours after actual collection, whichever is later. Valet service is available where the hauler retrieves containers from beside the structure. Haulers are prohibited from collecting loads containing visible recyclables. Electronics are banned from the landfill and must go to the city's Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
Chapter 57 violations are misdemeanors: up to $500 fine or 30 days imprisonment, each day counted separately. Haulers collecting contaminated recyclable loads face enforcement action.
