The Coral Gables Solid Waste Division provides single-stream recycling collection once per week from the backyard of single-family homes. Collection days vary by area β residents can find their schedule using the city's interactive recycling map. Recyclables must be clean, dry, and empty. Items should be placed loose in the bin β no plastic bags. Cardboard boxes must be broken down and placed beside (not inside) the bin. Accepted materials include plastic bottles and containers, paper (including cups), glass bottles and jars, cardboard, cereal and pizza boxes (minimal grease), aluminum and steel cans, and aseptic containers. Not accepted: batteries, plastic bags, food waste, styrofoam, garden hoses, textiles, Christmas lights, and propane tanks. The city provides recycling bins free of charge β call (305) 460-5346 to request one. Special programs include battery recycling at five city locations and plastic film recycling at three NexTrex drop-off sites. Hazardous waste is collected at bi-annual events. Contact Solid Waste at (305) 460-5346 or pwsolidwaste@coralgables.com.
Contaminating recycling with non-accepted materials may result in the load being rejected and collected as garbage. Cardboard placed in trash pits instead of recycling carries fines up to $500. Properties without recycling participation may receive code enforcement notices. The city's 8% contamination rate is maintained through active enforcement.
