Homestead provides single-stream recycling for residential properties. Recyclable materials include paper, cardboard, plastic containers, glass, and metal cans. Contamination with non-recyclable items (plastic bags, styrofoam, food waste) can cause entire loads to be rejected. Florida does not mandate residential recycling but encourages it.
Homestead's single-stream recycling program allows residents to place all recyclable materials in one bin without sorting. Accepted materials include newspaper, magazines, office paper, corrugated cardboard (flattened), plastic bottles and containers (#1-#7), glass bottles and jars, and aluminum and steel cans. Materials must be clean, dry, and free of food residue. Common contaminants that should not go in recycling bins include plastic bags and wrap, styrofoam, food waste, diapers, garden hoses, and electronics. Contaminated recycling loads may be diverted to landfill, undermining the program. Florida's 75% recycling goal (FL Statute Section 403.7032) sets a statewide target but does not mandate individual household recycling. However, Homestead encourages participation and provides convenient curbside service. Composting food scraps and yard waste at home further reduces waste. The city tracks recycling rates as part of its sustainability efforts and reports to the Florida DEP.
No fines for not recycling. Contaminated bins may be skipped or collected as trash. Repeated contamination may result in recycling service suspension. Contact Public Works for recycling questions.
