Ontario residents and businesses must separate recyclables and organics per California AB 341, AB 1826, and SB 1383, using blue recycling and green organics carts provided by Burrtec.
Recycling in Ontario is mandatory for both residents and businesses under a layered framework of California laws enforced through the Ontario franchise agreement with Burrtec. AB 341 (2012) requires any business generating 4 or more cubic yards of solid waste per week, and multifamily properties of 5 or more units, to subscribe to commercial recycling service. AB 1826 added organic waste recycling for large generators, and SB 1383 (effective 2022) requires every person, business, and property to separate food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard trimmings into a green organics cart. Acceptable items in the blue cart include clean cardboard, paper, plastic bottles and jugs marked 1 through 5, aluminum cans, and glass containers. Plastic bags, Styrofoam, shredded paper, garden hoses, and diapers are not accepted and may trigger contamination notices. Edible food generators (grocery stores, restaurants, large venues) must also donate surplus food to recovery organizations under SB 1383 Tier 1 and 2 rules. Commercial customers who fail to subscribe to proper service can be fined by the City up to 100 dollars per day.
