Rancho Cucamonga residents must source-separate recyclables into the blue cart and organics into the green cart per California SB 1383 and AB 341. Burrtec provides single-stream recycling and organics collection weekly.
Rancho Cucamonga implements California's mandatory recycling and organics diversion framework through its Burrtec franchise agreement and Municipal Code Chapter 8.17. Under AB 341, multifamily properties with 5 or more units and commercial businesses generating 4 or more cubic yards of solid waste weekly must subscribe to recycling service. Under AB 1826 and its successor SB 1383, all generators of organic waste including single-family homes must place food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard trimmings into the green organics cart for collection and composting, not the black refuse cart. The blue cart accepts commingled recyclables: rigid plastics labeled 1 and 2, aluminum and tin cans, glass bottles, cardboard (flattened), office paper, newspaper, and magazines. Contamination such as plastic bags, food-soiled cardboard, styrofoam, and tangled hoses should be kept out of the blue cart because they damage sorting equipment at the Burrtec Material Recovery Facility. Multifamily complexes must provide labeled recycling and organics bins in common trash areas per SB 1383, and commercial businesses must provide employee training on waste sorting under state regulations.
