Fontana complies with California AB 341, AB 1826, and SB 1383. All residents and businesses must separate recyclables and organic waste using Burrtec-provided blue and green carts.
Fontana enforces California state mandates on recycling and organic waste diversion. AB 341 requires commercial generators producing 4 or more cubic yards of solid waste per week to recycle. AB 1826 extends similar requirements to organic waste. SB 1383, effective since 2022, requires every household and business to separate organic waste including food scraps, food-soiled paper, and green yard waste into a dedicated organics cart. Residents receive three color-coded carts from Burrtec: blue for mixed paper, cardboard, bottles, and cans; green for organics and yard waste; and black or gray for residual trash. Contaminating carts with non-accepted materials can trigger warnings and higher rates. Multi-family and commercial customers must have recycling and organics service scaled to their waste volume. Education materials and community collection events are provided for sharps, electronics, and household hazardous waste.
