Port Orange, FL Trash & Recycling: Recycling Rules (2026)

Section 56-27(c) of the Port Orange City Code sets residential recycling service at once-weekly pickup, limited to material placed in one or more containers the city has approved and designated for recycling. Section 56-26 defines recyclable material broadly to include plastics, newspapers, glass containers, aluminum cans and similar materials capable of being recycled and that would otherwise be handled as garbage, and defines contaminated recyclable material as recyclable material comingled or mixed with solid waste or other material. The rule has teeth: any recycling container used to store or collect non-recyclable materials, or recyclable material that has become contaminated, will not be picked up by the crew that day, leaving the resident to sort it out before the next weekly run.

Commercial recycling is treated differently: Section 56-27(c) makes it an open market, so businesses must secure their own recycling service rather than relying on the city's residential program. Containers themselves must be kept separate from garbage under Section 56-34(b), which requires garbage and recycling to each be placed and maintained in distinct containers, and Section 56-31 puts the burden on the city or its franchisee to supply enough recycling-designated containers to hold a household's recyclables between collection days. The solid waste manager also has inspection authority: Section 56-35 subjects every recycling container to that office's approval.
