Summary

Bagging yard waste in plastic is banned outright, and municipal leaf collection itself runs only in November and December.

Yard Waste Collection. Sweeping, raking, blowing or otherwise placing yard waste that is not containerized at the curb or along the street is only allowed during the seven (7) days prior to a scheduled and announced collection, and shall not be placed closer than ten (10') feet from any storm drain inlet. Placement of such yard waste at the curb or along the street at any other time or in any other manner is a violation of this subsection.

Full Breakdown

3, Yard Waste Collection Program, adopted by Ordinance No. 2005-12 on May 9, 2005, allows sweeping, raking, blowing or otherwise placing uncontainerized yard waste at the curb only during the seven days before a scheduled and announced collection, and never within ten feet of a storm drain inlet; placing it at any other time is a violation, and the responsible party must remove it. 9c adds the preparation standards: yard waste goes in biodegradable paper bags, open containers, or tied bundles placed no more than four feet behind the curb, with no bag, container or bundle exceeding fifty pounds; branches must be cut to four-foot lengths and bundled at the same fifty-pound limit.

Containers must be labeled Yard Waste, hold no more than fifty gallons, and cannot have a hinged lid. Placing any yard waste, including leaves, grass or brush, in plastic bags is separately prohibited and such bags will not be collected. Waste generated by a commercial landscaper is not collected at all; the landscaper must remove it. Municipal leaf collection specifically runs only in November and December on posted, development-by-development schedules, and loose leaf placement for that program is allowed for fourteen days before the scheduled pickup, again kept ten feet clear of storm drains.

Violations & Fines

Placing yard waste at the curb outside the allowed window, within ten feet of a storm drain, or bagged in plastic violates §§ 17-6.3 and 19-2.9c. Enforcement runs through the Cherry Hill Police Department and the Community Development Department's Property Maintenance Division, with a fine of up to $500.00, and the responsible party must remove any improperly placed material from the street.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bag my leaves in a plastic garbage bag for Cherry Hill pickup?
No. Section 19-2.9c.2 states that placing yard waste, including leaves, grass clippings and brush, in plastic bags is prohibited and such bags will not be collected by the Township; use biodegradable paper bags, open containers, or tied bundles instead.
When can I put yard waste at the curb in Cherry Hill?
Section 17-6.3 allows loose, uncontainerized yard waste at the curb only during the seven days before a scheduled and announced collection, and it cannot be placed within ten feet of a storm drain inlet; violators must remove it themselves.
Does Cherry Hill collect leaves year-round?
No. Under § 19-2.9c.4, municipal leaf collection runs only in November and December on posted, development-specific schedules; outside that window, residents manage leaves through the regular containerized yard waste program instead.
