Blue Springs, MO Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Section 215.125 bans livestock and farm animals, including poultry, from any residentially zoned district within Blue Springs, even if the owner considers them pets, unless the use is approved as a conditional use under Title IV of the Code. Section 215.127 carves backyard hens out of that ban: a tract can keep up to six female backyard hens regardless of how many dwelling units sit on it, and only hens (no roosters, peacocks, turkeys, guinea fowl or waterfowl) qualify. Hens must be secured in a coop, run or hen tractor at all times, locked up during non-daylight hours, and the enclosure has to be clean, dry, odor-free and impermeable to rodents and predators.

Coops and tractors must sit at least ten feet from the property line and at least forty feet from any adjacent residential dwelling, church, school or place of business, and must run two to four square feet of floor space per hen, at least two feet of interior roosting height, and no more than eight feet of exterior height. Both the coop-size rules and the neighbor setback trigger drop away once the hens are kept four hundred feet or more from any other inhabitant's residence. Odors cannot be perceptible at the property line, commercial breeding or fertilizer sales are banned, and hens cannot run at large.
