Tamarac, FL Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Section 9-130 sets residential property maintenance standards for the City of Tamarac, and subsection (e)(2) is the operative rule for backyard animals: no animals, livestock or poultry of any kind may be raised, bred or kept on any lot. Sec. 9-130(c) defines livestock as farm animals such as cows, horses, cattle, goats and pigs, and poultry as birds such as roosters, hens, ducks, turkeys and geese, so the prohibition sweeps in the common categories of backyard chicken-keeping and small-scale farm animal husbandry alike. The only carve-out in subsection (e)(2) is for dogs, cats or other household pets, and even that exception is conditional: a pet may be kept only if it is not kept, bred or maintained for any commercial purpose, so a resident running a breeding operation out of the home would fall outside the exception regardless of species.

This rule sits among the broader Sec. 9-130(e) minimum standards for maintenance of premises, whose stated purpose under subsection (a) is to preserve neighborhood character, property values and public health, safety and welfare, and which also regulates hedges, refuse containers, gas tanks and exterior maintenance in the same subsection. Because the ban applies to every residential lot rather than to a specific zoning district, it is a citywide prohibition rather than a district-by-district standard, and it exists independently of the separate use-table provisions of the Land Development Code.

Enforcement runs through Sec. 9-130(i): the code compliance division, working with the Broward Sheriff's Office, cites violations (Broward County Animal Care handles animal control matters separately), with disputes heard by the special magistrate and appeals going to the circuit court.
