Under Sec. 5-12, it is unlawful to own, possess, keep, or harbor any wild animal within Richardson. Wild animals include lions, tigers, bears, wolves, alligators, crocodiles, coyotes, elephants, poisonous reptiles, and similar species.
Section 5-12 of the Richardson Code prohibits ownership, possession, keeping, or harboring of any wild animal within the city. Section 5-1 defines wild animals broadly as any mammal (except domestic dogs, cats, horses, cattle, swine, sheep, goats) and any amphibian, reptile, or fowl not naturally tame or gentle, including but not limited to lions, tigers, leopards, panthers, bears, wolves, alligators, crocodiles, bobcats, coyotes, elephants, rhinoceroses, and all forms of poisonous reptiles. Defenses include: governmental entities, public zoos, research institutions, animal exhibitions/rodeos/circuses (with proper restraint), and licensed wildlife rehabilitation centers.
Possession of a wild animal is a misdemeanor offense with fines per Sec. 1-8. The animal will be impounded and may be destroyed.
