Woodland, CA Animal Ordinances: Exotic Pets (2026)

Section 17.84.080.C.1 bars anyone from keeping cattle, horses, swine, sheep, goats, geese, ducks, turkeys, roosters and other poultry or game birds anywhere in the City, unless the keeping is specifically permitted under Municipal Code Chapter 6.08, Domestic Animal Keeping. Subsection H then names the wild and exotic side of the ban directly: roosters, peacocks and geese are prohibited outright, and so is any animal that would require a State Department of Fish and Wildlife permit under Fish and Game Code § 2118, a category that reaches most non-domesticated wild and exotic species.

The zoning code carves out narrow, numeric exceptions elsewhere in the same section for common small pets and limited livestock. Miniature Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs may be kept noncommercially, capped at three on R-1 lots of at least 20,000 square feet, or one to two in the N-P, RL-M and R-M zones depending on lot size, with the pig confined to the owner's premises in an enclosure set back at least 30 feet from the front line and 35 feet from any other dwelling. Rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and similarly small animals are capped at four total, kept in a clean, enclosed pen. Dogs and cats fall under Chapter 6.08's separate domestic-animal rules, and Yolo County Animal Services enforces day-to-day animal control under the City's contract.
