Broomfield, CO Animal Ordinances: Pet Limits (2026)

Section 6-24-010(A), part of Chapter 6-24 (Livestock, Horses, and Prohibited Animals), makes it unlawful for anyone to keep, maintain, possess or harbor more than a total of four animals over six months old at a dwelling within Broomfield's residential and urbanized areas. The cap counts pets together as a household total rather than setting a separate per-species number, and it excludes fish and birds entirely, so an aquarium or a parakeet does not count against the four-animal ceiling. The section also closes an accessory-dwelling-unit workaround: it treats an ADU as an extension of the principal dwelling, so the combined number and types of animals kept between the main house and any ADU on the same lot cannot exceed the four-animal limit set for the property as a whole, rather than letting each unit claim its own separate cap.

Animals under six months old, such as a litter of kittens or puppies, are not counted toward the limit while they remain under that age. The same section elsewhere addresses livestock and fowl separately in subsection (B), and prohibited exotic and wild animals in subsection (C), so the four-animal cap in subsection (A) applies specifically to ordinary domestic pets like dogs, cats and ferrets kept in a residential household.
