09, requires an electrical permit from the Building Official before anyone erects, alters, installs, repairs, moves, improves, removes, connects or converts electrical equipment. 10, the Los Angeles County Electrical Code (Title 27), Article 90, Chapters 1 through 9, and Annexes A through J, as amended and in effect through January 1, 2023, which itself incorporates the 2022 California Electrical Code. 2 exempts nine categories from a separate electrical permit: minor repairs like replacing lamps, switches or receptacles previously permitted; connecting portable equipment to an already-permitted receptacle by cord and plug; replacing overcurrent devices; temporary theater or stage wiring; like-for-like replacement of previously permitted fixed motors or appliances; wiring under 25 volts and 50 watts; low-voltage telephone, intercom, alarm or signal wiring at 30 volts or less; temporary decorative lighting installed 90 days or less; and approved temporary test wiring.

1 is required for larger installations, including any service or equipment rated 400 amperes or more, motors over 10 horsepower, transformers or generators, storage batteries, illuminated signs, and assembly rooms with more than 500 occupants. Exemption from the permit does not authorize work that otherwise violates the Code or other laws.
